In 1925, the land on which the course was built was gifted to the people of Chesterfield by a local wealthy benefactor, Charles Paxton Markham 2 years prior to his death. In May 2009, at the first of the inaugural Four Captains Charity Competitions, the 18 hole course was renamed the ‘Markham Course’ at a rededication ceremony in honour of the family.
The course, originally comprising 9 holes designed by George Duncan, was formally opened by the Mayor of Chesterfield, Councillor W. Oakley on Thursday 18th May 1934. To mark the occasion an exhibition match was played between 3 local club golf professionals; Mr C F Knight (Chesterfield), Mr S H Nash (Tapton), Mr J Rickinson (Derby) and George Duncan, former Ryder Cup Captain and 1920 Open champion.
At the opening ceremony Mr Duncan stated:
‘’The Course has great possibilities, the surrounding scenery is delightful and the turf is first rate. Some of the fog needs removing but it should not take long to get the whole course in very fine condition. It’s not too long for a municipal course and not too severely bunkered. This is a blessing because there are many natural hazards and the greens have been well designed”
“Municipal golf’’ he added ‘’is the finest thing in the world for workers and you can take my word for it that this course will have to be extended to 18 holes within 18 months.’’
This was fine praise indeed from a man of such stature in his day.
